University of Evansville to hold performance in honor of student killed in crash

EVANSVILLE — The University of Evansville theatre community is mourning the loss of one of its own, 21-year-old Muhammad Khan, a UE student killed Saturday in a multi-car crash on the Lloyd Expressway.

The Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office publicly identified Khan as the sole fatality of the crash Monday morning.

In a news release, Chief Deputy Coroner David Anson said the incident occurred just before 5 p.m. Saturday at the Lloyd Expressway—Fielding Road intersection.

Khan, a resident of Newburgh, Indiana, was a junior psychology major at UE, university officials said, and he served as part of the ensemble cast for UE's production of the play "Waiting For Lefty."

UE spokesman Noah Alatza said the theatre program would dedicate a final performance of the play to Khan's memory. The showing will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at UE's Shanklin Theatre.

"The performance is free and open to our campus and the greater Evansville community.," Alatza wrote in a news release. The public can reserve free tickets online or by calling UE's ticket office at 812-488-2031 anytime between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m.

"Waiting For Lefty," written by American playwright Clifford Odets, depicts a series of vignettes inspired by a 1934 New York cabbie strike. UE first performed its rendition of the play April 12.

As of Monday afternoon, public records did not list a crash report under Khan's name, and neither the coroner's office nor the Evansville Police Department had stated what may have caused the fatal accident.

Anson said Khan died due to "multiple blunt force trauma" sustained during the crash.
