Commissioners agree on bench storage during courthouse ceiling restoration

In a special Tuesday meeting, the Ashland County commissioners accepted an estimate from Mitchell’s Movers 3G for the removal and storage of public seating benches in the courthouse.

With bubbles appearing in the ceiling plaster, the ceiling could prove to be a liability and safety issue.

“Part of the ceiling is starting to get a pretty good bubble in it,” said Commissioner Mike Welch. “And we are concerned that it may end up falling down. We are working on the logistics of how we are going to handle that."

“It is an emergency measure,” said Commissioner James Justice. “It is something that we can’t let go. It is something that has to happened fairly quickly.”

The estimate is not to exceed $3,435.

“We carry the liability and we are aware of it and we know something needs to happen to it,” Welch said.

In other matters the commissioners

  • Entered into a contract with Adena Corporation for $999,000 for a structure bridge replacement project. The cost will be divided between the county and the city.

  • Approved advertising for the second meeting of the Emergency Food and Shelter Program committee to be held virtually Aug. 29.

  • Accepted first quarter donations for the dog shelter, which includes $4,288 in cash and checks.

Commissioners will meet 9 a.m. Thursday in the Commissioner’s Conference Room on the second floor of the County Office Building. The meetings are open to the public. They are livestreamed on the Ashland County Government Facebook page.
