Columbus Technical College received donation to pay for GED exams

COLUMBUS, Ga (WRBL) —  Columbus Technical College received a donation from Flint Energies to support students who are preparing for High school Equivalency Exams.

Flint Energies has been a contributor to Columbus Technical College since 2007. Their most recent contribution has relieved students in the Adult Education Department of the financial burden of the GED exam voucher.

In speaking with April Hopson, the Vice President of Adult and General Education says, “Sometimes you have to decide on paying the light bill or putting food on the table versus  paying to take the GED exam. And so what Flint Energies has done, they have taken that barrier of that burden off of our students. And so the students only have to focus on passing the exam.”

Hopson also says, “It just brings a tear to my eye that we’re still very important to them, that our students are very important to them.”

Hopson assured that the funds are used responsibly as the school uses a scientific method to support the distribution of the vouchers.  Columbus Technical Colleges issues an official practice test for the GED exam to ensure that students are prepared.

When asked about this process, Hopson told WRBL, “the worst thing a program can do is just send a student into a test and they’re not ready.”

In using this method, the school has been able to have a one hundred percent pass rate for the exams.
