In August 2018, the property became a crime scene after Chris strangled his wife Shanann and smothered their two young daughters Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3. Shanann was 15 weeks pregnant with their son at the time.

Chris was having an affair with his co-worker who believed he was already separated from Shanaan before he committed the murders. According to officials, this was Watts’ motive for the unthinkable crimes.

He received a life sentence in prison after pleading guilty to the murders in November 2018 to avoid a possible death sentence.

The home was purchased by the Watts family in 2013 for $399,954. It remained vacant after the 2018 crimes for nearly four years until it was purchased in 2022 for $600,000, according to property records.

Following the murders, Chris went into default on the mortgage and the lender foreclosed on the property. His debts increased when he agreed to pay $6 million to Shanann’s parents after they filed a wrongful death lawsuit against him.

PEOPLE spoke to one of the Watts family’s neighbors in 2018 who said there was an increase in traffic on their block due to people stopping to take photos.

"It's really bizarre," the neighbor told PEOPLE. "You can always tell who they are because they'll cruise the neighborhood slowly and then get out of their cars and take pictures of the house. Some of them even take selfies. It's gross."

Interest in the house was renewed after the release of the Netflix documentary American Murder: The Family Next Door in September 2020. The documentary further explains Chris’ motive behind the murders and includes rare text messages and letters between him and Shanann.
