City to seek grant for affordable housing project

May 19—WATERTOWN — The city plans to apply for a RESTORE NY grant on behalf of a Rochester developer who plans to redevelop a vacant Factory Square building for affordable housing.

The developer, Greenleaf Community Builders, has asked the city to submit the grant application for $5 million to help finance the project to convert the building at 629 Factory Square into 72 apartments.

The City Council is expected to vote on the RESTORE NY grant application on Monday night.

Before the vote, the public will get a chance to comment on the application and the project during a public hearing at 7:15 p.m.

The funding would come through the state Empire State Development Corporation as a special project in the eighth round of the RESTORE NY program.

The application is due on Tuesday.

The council meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the third-floor council chambers at City Hall.
