City council celebrates ABAC sorority

Apr. 17—TIFTON — City council congratulated the local chapter of the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority on their one-year anniversary during the council's most recent meeting.

Mayor Julie Smith invited the members of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College's Upsilon Kappa chapter of the sorority to the city council's April 15 meeting to help them celebrate the momentous occasion for their organization.

The social and service sorority, which has over 100,000 members across the country and world, established a chapter at ABAC in 2022, being the first Divine 9 organization to do so.

In a proclamation, Smith expressed her appreciation for the organization in contributing to the enrichment and betterment of the community over the past two years, declared the following day a celebration of their anniversary, and encouraged Tifton residents to celebrate the day along with them.

Following this, Lawanna Barron, a 35-year member of Sigma Gamma Rho, thanked the city council in turn for their acknowledgment and congratulations, and found a particular poeticism in the founding of the local chapter taking place a century after the creation of the larger organization.

Upsilon Kappa also plans to hold a "Charterversary Picnic" at the Chapel of All Faiths April 20, from 4 to 6 p.m., to celebrate their anniversary. Sorors are asked to wear casual colors.
