Chunky's Cinema to close in Nashua and Pelham

Apr. 3—Chunky's Cinema Pub locations in Nashua and Pelham will close on May 9.

The decision brings the locally owned chain down to one remaining location, in Manchester.

All staff will be offered jobs, and gift cards will be honored at the Manchester location on Huse Road, according to a post on Facebook.

Chunky's has been in Nashua for 17 years and in Pelham for 27 years. The Manchester location opened in 2017.

Chunky's describes itself as "the only way to see a movie," with a full food and drink menu and actual Lincoln Town Car front passenger seats complete with full recline and swivel.

The number of Chunky's locations has ebbed and flowed over the years, with the most being five at one time, including one in Haverhill, Mass., and two in Maine.

Chunky's was founded by James and Kyle Nagle with a single screen in Plaistow in 1993.

Several cinemas across the state have closed in the past few years, spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Derry Five Star Cinema is being repurposed into a warehouse and distribution facility for C.H.I. Overhead Doors. The former Regal Cinema in Hooksett is set to become a Harley-Davidson dealership. A former Cinemagic in Portsmouth is being converted to housing.

During the pandemic, when movie production dwindled, Chunky's re-screened popular classics such as "Jaws," "Ghostbusters" and "The Goonies."
