Chula Vista reviewing replacements to fill vacant District 4 seat

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KUSI/ FOX 5) — Who wants to be a council member? That was on the agenda at Chula Vista’s city council meeting Tuesday as eight nominees were presented as possible replacements for embattled Andrea Cardenas and her vacated District 4 seat.

“So out of those eight, we’ll nominate who we actually want to come in for an interview, and then April 9 we’ll actually do the interviews in public,” said Chula Vista Mayor John McCann.  “We’re looking for people to come in and bring us questions so we can ask everybody the same questions.”

The question is: can the normally divided council agree on one nominee?

“We want somebody who’s going to focus on Chula Vista first, not themselves, to be able to be non-partisan, to be able to work with each other and be collaborative,” said McCann.

The Cardenas saga almost didn’t come to a close after she garnered over 15% of the votes on March 5. While not enough to move onto the November election, it’s enough to raise eyebrows as to why Chula Vista residents would vote for an outgoing convicted felon.

“A lot of people when they go in, they see that they’re a council member,” said McCann. “I think the city does a great job of running the city and when you have that title of being a council member or the mayor, there’s many people that are going to vote for you because they like what’s happening in the city.”
