Chris Hemsworth admits getting a seven minute standing ovation at Cannes was "awkward".

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga debuted at the film festival and received an incredible response from the audience. Hemsworth and his co-star Anya Taylor-Joy appeared on The One Show just a day after attending Cannes Film Festival.

They admitted that standing through such a long round of applause had started to feel uncomfortable, and the minutes seemed to go on for ever. However, Taylor-Joy confessed she was just relieved not to be booed.

Hemsworth, 40, and The Queen's Gambit star Taylor-Joy, 28, star in Furiosa, the latest film in the Mad Max franchise and a prequel to 2015’s Oscar-winning Mad Max: Fury Road, starring Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy.

The new film, directed by George Miller, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and the audience gave the stars a standing ovation reported to have lasted for six or seven minutes. It was both the actors' first time at the festival and Hemsworth admitted to The One Show hosts Lauren Laverne and and Roman Kemp that he felt awkward "pretty much straight away".

He added: "I've heard six minutes, six-and-a-half, seven, someone said eight, there's all different reports. It felt like 30. You just clap your hands after a [while], you're also clapping yourself, which is even worse. Do I stop?"

But Taylor-Joy added: "It goes in waves. To be fair, they can boo. So I'm really glad it was clapping and not booing."

Taylor Joy plays part mechanical war soldier Furiosa in the origin story, who rarely speaks and does not move her face.

She revealed: "What's crazy was I was never concerned about the lack of dialogue, it made a lot of sense for the character. But George also had a very strict idea about how he wanted to hold my face for a lot of the film so when you say I only had my eyes it was really just this [middle part of her face].

"But I think there's an element where it intensified the situation, Because I'm she wants to talk about what's going on in her life, but she's just surviving."

Dara O Briain appeared on the show to discuss his new C5 documentary series Mysteries Of The Pyramids, about how the ancient Egyptians managed to build the enormous stone structures. But presenter Kemp was convinced the pyramids were in fact build by aliens.

He said: "Dara I'm going to come straight out and say it, I'm just asking the question, 'How did the aliens do it?'"

The Irish comedian said: "It is literally impossible to do this topic without somebody mentioning aliens. Because it is one of the great human stories about how they did it. And every time we go that seemed very difficult, we don't know how they did it, and then somebody rushes in and goes 'Maybe it was aliens.'"

O Briain revealed he takes inspiration from Hemsworth when interviewing conspiracy theorists. He told the Australian actor: "This is so good to have you here for this. There is a face I do, which I call the Thor mean face, which is every time somebody goes, 'I bet it was the aliens!' and I go, 'hmmm' [head on one side frowning.]" Hemsworth joined in doing his own Thor mean face, as O Briain added: "So that's my view on the aliens thing."

The One Show airs on BBC One at 7pm Monday to Friday.

Furiosa is released in cinemas on Friday, 24 May.

Mysteries Of The Pyramids with Dara O'Briain begins on Channel 5 on Monday, 20 May.
