Over the years, Chris Hemsworth has been in a number of well-known productions. And while his roles in Snow White and the Huntsmen or the Extraction series garnered some buzz, nothing has made him a star quite like his role in Thor in Marvel movies. After all, Hemsworth has been the face behind Thor since 2011.

So, it’s no surprise that Hemsworth isn’t afraid to defend Marvel, especially given some recent criticisms from acclaimed directors Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola.

“It felt harsh,” Hemsworth told The Times of the directors’ remarks, who had agreed the superhero movies “are not cinema,” per Daily Mail. “It was an eye-roll for me, people bashing the superhero space,” Hemsworth added.

Hemsworth, who recently co-chaired the 2024 Met Gala, went on to say that a lot of movie-making is being able to take risks, whether they pay off or not. “Those guys had films that didn’t work too,” Hemsworth said. “We all have.”

“When they talked about what was wrong with superheroes, I thought, ‘Cool, tell that to the billions who watch them.’ Were they all wrong?” Hemsworth questioned. “And cinema-going did not change because of superheroes, but because of smartphones and social media,” he explained. “Superhero films actually kept people in the cinemas during that transition and now people are coming back.”

“They deserve a little more appreciation,” he stated.

The Furiosa star then addressed some Marvel actors, including Idris Elba and Christian Bale, who have starred in Marvel movies and later criticized them. “It’s like, ‘They’re films that are successful. Put me in one. Oh, mine didn’t work? I’ll bash them,'” Hemsworth said.

“Look, I grew up on a soap opera and it used to bother me when actors would later talk about the show with guilt or shame,” the Australian star continued. “Humility goes a long way.”

Knowing how many fans have rooted and followed his journey in Marvel, we’re sure so many of them appreciate Hemsworth’s stance. Kudos to him for standing up for his movies.
