CHP launching statewide maximum enforcement period for Memorial Day Weekend

(FOX40.COM) — In an effort to reduce crashes on all of California’s roadways this Memorial Day Weekend the California Highway Patrol will be launching a statewide Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP).

From 6:01 p.m. on Friday to 11:59 p.m. on Monday there will be an increased presence of CHP officers across California.

During the 2023 MEP on Memorial Day Weekend, the CHP says there were 1,100 DUI arrests and 46 people killed in crashes during the 78-hour period.

“Loss of life on our roads is preventable when drivers make safe and responsible choices behind the wheel,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “Always remember to drive sober, avoid distraction, adhere to the speed limit, and ensure adults are buckled up and children are properly secured in an appropriate car seat.”

The CHP is asking those planning to drink or use recreational drugs to have a sober driver, use ride-sharing services or public transportation.
