Charlotte’s first Black-owned brewery is closing its doors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Charlotte’s first Black-owned brewery is closing its doors this week.

Owners of Weathered Souls on Clanton Road announced Monday that Saturday, April 6, will be the brewery’s final day of operation. It opened in November 2022, but co-owner Mike Holt told Queen City News last December they were seeing a 30 percent drop in revenue despite being in a rapidly growing area.

“With that, the traffic has been slower than we thought it would be,” head chef Jamisen Booker said then. “We’re hearing this from everybody, restaurants, breweries, cideries, you name it.”

They were searching for investors to stay afloat.

“A heartfelt thank you to @blackmenrun_clt@brandingblock@qcitymetro, and all who stood by us from the beginning,” the brewery’s Instagram post says. “This is our last call in Charlotte. Here’s to the next chapter.”

There is another Weathered Souls location in San Antonio, Texas.
