Champaign Police giving away Kia, Hyundai steering wheel locks

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign Police Department is giving away free steering wheel locks to vulnerable Kia and Hyundai owners.

The program is in response to a widespread social media trend that emerged in 2021 after TikTok videos demonstrated how to steal the cars. Even 3 years later, the problem has persisted.

As recently as Wednesday morning, a Hyundai was stolen in Champaign and wrecked in Urbana. Springfield Police have also taken measures to combat the issue.

Therefore, Champaign Police are distributing the steering wheel locks to not only Champaign residents, but anyone who needs one. Visitors are only asked to bring proof of ownership of a 2011-2021 Kia vehicle or a 2013-2021 Hyundai vehicle to qualify for a lock.

Officials said the locks are available on a first come, first served basis. Those interested can visit the front desk of the police station at 82 East University Avenue in Champaign.
