Celebrating DC Emancipation Day at Freedom Plaza

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) –On Sunday, Mayor Bowser kicked off DC Emancipation Day festivities.

DC Emancipation Day honors the day President Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act of 1862, which freed over 3,100 enslaved persons in the District.

This year, festivities included a parade, food trucks, a concert on Freedom Plaza and it ended with fireworks.

On Monday at 12 p.m., Mayor Bowser will host the seventh annual Full Democracy Champions Luncheon.

The luncheon will commemorate the abolition of slavery in the D.C. 162 years ago.
