Carnival Legend moves to Norfolk after Baltimore bridge collapse

NORFOLK, Va. (DC News Now) — Carnival Cruise Line said Tuesday that it would move operations for one of its ships from Baltimore, Md. to Norfolk, following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.

The bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning after the container ship Dali hit one of its supports. Several people fell into the water. The search for six construction workers who were on the bridge at the time of the collision continued late in the day Tuesday, although the company for which they worked said they were presumed dead, given the water conditions and the length of time that had passed.

Carnival Legend, which was set to return to Baltimore from its current voyage, should arrive on March 31 as planned, but it will dock in Downtown Norfolk. Carnival said it will provide guests with complimentary bus service back to Maryland.

Carnival Legend’s next seven-day itinerary on March 31 will operate from and return to Norfolk.

The cruise line said it was informing guests on the current and upcoming cruises of the change.

Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.
