Carlsbad considers moving part of Highway 101

CARLSBAD, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Some Carlsbad city leaders and beach advocates are concerned about beach erosion.

On some sections of the beach in Carlsbad, you can see how big storms have caused sand to be washed away leaving behind rock.

Waves will often go over the seawall and onto the road. This is something that’s been happening more and more.

Highway 101 in Carlsbad may be moved

The City of Carlsbad is now considering moving a portion of Carlsbad Boulevard, also known as Highway 101, inland.

A report by the Carlsbad Beach Preservation Committee was presented to the city council Tuesday, providing information about moving a section of the road off the coast.

Experts say it is a fact that low lining areas are subject to flooding in Carlsbad.

Some residents who spoke at the meeting said they were against the idea of moving the road, citing concerns about increased traffic, flow and narrowing down the lanes. One resident pointed to safety concerns for walkers and bikers.

For now, the city will look at applying for federal money to make the project happen. A design of the plan is expected to be presented to city council by 2028.
