Carlsbad Caverns enforces preventative fire measures

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Carlsbad Caverns National Park will start to implement some preventative measures in the wake of the dangers coming from hot weather.

New Mexico Forestry offers tips on how to prevent forest fires

According to the news release by Carlsbad Caverns, the park will start implementing the following preventative measures starting on Thursday, May 23:

  • Fire, charcoal and propane grills are prohibited

  • Smoking is prohibited except inside of personal vehicles

  • Open flames and cooking stoves are prohibited in underdeveloped/remote areas

UPDATE: Evacuation orders for Cloudcroft fire lifted

According to Carlsbad Caverns, there is an increase fire danger due to hot, dry and windy weather and those factors can result in dry vegetation that is highly flammable, even to the smallest of sparks.

The implementation will be in effect until the fire danger subsides, according to Carlsbad Caverns.
