These Are the Car Models GM Is Killing Off in Its 2019 Restructuring

Similar to-but not quite in the same way as-Ford is killing off nearly all of its car models in North America, General Motors is restructuring its lineup to focus more on crossovers, SUVs, trucks, and electric vehicles. As a result, several North American plants will shut down in 2019 as part of the company's attempt to increase cash flow, a move that leaves as casualties several Chevrolet, Cadillac, and Buick car models. Unlike Ford, GM isn't writing off cars entirely (yet), but even so, the cuts affect some key models. Here, we've outlined all of the GM models that will go out of production by next year.

Unlike the Hyundai Elantra and Elantra GT, the Chevrolet Cruze sedan and hatchback are one in the same, albeit with unique tails. (Hence why both are grouped into a single entry here.) The Chevrolets also drive with a solid, big-car feel, with both delivering a comfortable, well-isolated ride and a quiet cabin at speed. A gasoline-fed turbocharged four-cylinder engine is standard, while a diesel is optional-the latter delivered an incredible 52 mpg in our testing. In an interesting twist, the Cruze is being canceled early in 2019, despite Chevrolet having just rolled out a facelifted version earlier this year.

Production of the large Impala sedan is scheduled to draw to an end by the fourth quarter of 2019. It is currently built at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck plant in southeast Michigan. After debuting for 2014 to positive reception thanks to its handsome styling and tidy road manners, the current-generation Impala did not receive many updates and slowly slipped into the automotive industry's background.

The second-generation Chevy Volt improves on its groundbreaking predecessor in nearly every way, from its less bizarre styling to its higher-quality, ergonomically sound interior that now seats five, one more than the original. Its drivetrain can operate in pure-EV mode for an EPA-estimated 53 miles, the most of any car on this list save for the BMW i3, and once the battery is depleted, it can travel another 400 miles or so down the highway.

Sharing its name with a town in Wisconsin and its Detroit-Hamtramck production location with the related Chevrolet Impala, the Buick LaCrosse large sedan will cease production in March 2019 for the U.S.

General Motors will hold off ending production of the big sedans until January 2020-good news for the classic Detroit asssembly plant that builds them.
