Capital Bikeshare breaks record for most rides in single day

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Capital Bikeshare announced Wednesday that the DC bike service broke multiple records last month, including the most single rides in one day on March 16.

Ridership has been steadily increasing, reports from Capital Bikeshare’s monthly released daily collection showed. In a statement on the platform X, the bikeshare system, launched by the District of Columbia and Arlington County in 2010, announced the growth experienced in March 2024, including significant gains in e-bikes.

Capital Bikeshare logged over 20,000 rides on March 16 — the most rides ever logged in system history. The previous record was around 19,000 rides which was recorded on October 28, 2023.

While this doesn’t compare to the Citi Bike record New Yorkers set last August for over 160,000 rides, it shows incremental progress in fully integrating into the city’s infrastructure.

Compared to other major metropolitan cities with bike sharing systems, D.C. ranked third in ridership, only behind Chicago by just 1 million rides, according to data compiled by Greater Greater Washington.

D.C.’s Mayor Muriel Bowser hopes to close this gap. In the budget she presented April 3, Bowser pledged $3 million to “support the operating and maintenance costs of Capital Bikeshare’s continued growth” which will go towards funding additional stations, e-bikes and traditional bikes.
