Cajuns Get Near-Perfect Performance, Finish Sweep of Chanticleers

LAFAYETTE – Chloe Riassetto and Sam Landry provided a tag team effort in the circle to steer the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball team to a 3-1 win over Coastal Carolina on Sunday, March 24 at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park, wrapping up a sweep of the three-game Sun Belt Conference series.

Riassetto and Landry handcuffed the Chanticleers the entire contest, the duo assigned to handling the lefthanded and righthanded batters, respectively, in carrying a combined no-hitter into the seventh.

The Cajuns (21-13, 6-0 SBC) used alternative methods to scoring this time around, starting with Mihyia Davis stealing third and scoring on an errant throw for the only run of the game until the sixth inning.

Coastal Carolina (18-14, 1-5 SBC) hung in behind the efforts of pitcher Raelee Brabham who matched the Cajuns duo in the circle until a pair of hits in the sixth led to a Brooke Ellestad sacrifice fly followed by Sam Roe scoring on a catcher’s obstruction to make it 3-0.

The Chanticleers spoiled the no-hit bid with a pair of one-out singles in the seventh and avoided the shutout with a subsequent sacrifice fly.

Riassetto finished with 3-1/3 innings of no-hit softball pitched and listed in the batting lineup for the first time collected her first collegiate hit in the sixth inning. Landry struck out seven during her 3-2/3 innings in the circle and was credited with the win which marked the 50th of her collegiate career.

Davis led off with a single in the first extending her career-best hitting streak to 14 games. Ellestad’s sacrifice fly increased her team-leading RBI total in SBC play to nine.

With the win Louisiana came away victorious for the 12th time in the past 13 outings and moved a season-high eight games above the .500 mark.

The Cajuns stretched their series win streak over Coastal to 15 games dating back to 2020 and improved to 25-2 all-time against the Chanticleers (includes a perfect 12-0 mark at Lamson Park).

The only unbeaten team remaining in SBC play, Louisiana is off to its best start in the league at 6-0 since the 2019 season when the Cajuns went undefeated (25-0).
