Bryan County has agreed to spend a little over $4.7 million to rebuild Hendrix Park gymnasium two years after it was destroyed when a tornado swept through Ellabell and Pembroke, Georgia.

"The approval of this contract marks a significant milestone in our journey toward recovery and renewal," said Carter Infinger, chairman of the Bryan County Board of Commissioners. "We are committed to rebuilding Hendrix Park's gymnasium to even greater standards, providing a safe and welcoming space for our community to come together and thrive."

During last week's board meeting, Commissioner Noah Covington said getting to this point has been no easy task. He acknowledged the public had grown restless and tried to explain why it had taken this long to begin rebuilding.

“I would like to thank the staff for their hard work on this,” said Covington. “I would like the public to understand and recognize what has went into doing this. It was not just that a tornado hit, it was the negotiations with the insurance company and the ongoing negotiations with the insurance company. There is a still deficit of about $1,500,000. That’s a product of ongoing negotiations with the insurance company.”

According to a press release issued by the county, the project will take 18 months to complete and will feature more than 10,000 square feet of gym area.
