Broadway budget presentation, public hearing is May 20

Apr. 25—BROADWAY — The Broadway commissioners agreed Monday to move their next meeting to May 20.

The move is necessary since the meeting would normally be held the fourth Monday of the month — which falls on May 27 this year.

Not only is it Memorial Day, but the N.C. Veterans War Memorial Pavilion is the site each year for a service to recognize Lee County residents who died in service to the nation.

The service will begin at 10 a.m. in the park at 200 Main St.

The May 20 meeting won't be short on items for action, according to Mayor Donald Andrews.

The town's proposed 2024-25 fiscal year budget will be presented that night followed by a public hearing, Andrews said.

The current 2023-24 budget adopted by the commissioners was $1,716,394. The tax rate dropped from 53 cents per $100 of property value to 44 cents per $100 of property value.

That budget included a 7% hike in water and sewer fees, a 5% salary adjustment for town employees and increased the starting pay for police officers by $3,000.
