Boil water advisory reissued for Peabody

MARION COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — Less than six hours after telling Peabody residents their water is safe to drink, state health officials have reissued a boil water advisory for the town.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment reported another loss of pressure in the City of Peabody’s public water supply system.

When there is a loss of pressure, it can create a risk of bacteria.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

  • Boil water for one minute before drinking it or preparing food with it, or use bottled water.

  • Dispose of ice cubes, and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.

  • If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.

  • Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.

  • Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

Only the KDHE can rescind a boil water advisory. That will happen after the KDHE determines the problem has been fixed and the water has been tested at a certified laboratory and is deemed safe.

This is the second boil water advisory for the town this week. The first one happened Tuesday because a broken water line caused a loss of pressure in the system. The KDHE ended that advisory Thursday morning.

The new boil water advisory was sent to the media shortly after 4 p.m. Thursday.

Peabody residents with questions can call 620-983-2174 or the KDHE at 785-296-5514. You can also click here to check the KDHE‘s consumer information webpage.

Restaurants and other food establishments with questions about the impact of the boil water advisory on their business can contact the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s food safety and lodging program at kda.fsl@ks.gov or call 785-564-6767.
