BMW Unveils Edgy, Luxurious Concept 8 Series Coupe

This week, BMW takes the wraps off its Concept 8 Series Coupe to foreshadow the launch of a production BMW 8 Series Coupe in 2018. The Concept 8 Series is razor-edged yet elegant, and will reflect the “pinnacle of sports performance and exclusivity,” according to the German automaker’s Chairman Harold Krüger. The BMW Concept 8 Series large premium sporty car debuts on Friday, May 26 at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Estat vintage and classic car competition near Lake Como, Italy.

The fresh, sleek, and edgy design features iconic BMW styling cues. A top BMW design official describes the concept as a “full-blooded, high-end driving machine” that is “a slice of pure automotive fascination.” Low-slung, the car has powerful flanks that flare out over 21-in. light-alloy wheels and boasts a long hoodline and a flowing roofline. The trademark kidney-shaped grille is wide with super slim razor headlights. A sporty rear treatment features a carbon-fiber diffuser and large trapezoid-shape exhaust pipes. In addition, the new 8 Series Concept’s grey-blue paint with iridescent pigments shows off character lines and surfaces.

Inside, the cabin is driver-centric luxury. Control clusters are organized for ultimate driving functionality, grouped in the center stack, console, and the doors. Sports seats are slim with carbon-fiber shells and upholstery is fine leather. The steering wheel’s polished aluminum spokes and red paddle shifters kindle a race car at the track theme. A combination of dark brown and Fjord white Merino leather with polished aluminum and carbon fiber accents offer a modern feel. An extra luxury touch is a smoky quartz crystal iDrive controller.

The forthcoming new 8 Series will likely be the replacement for the 6 Series Coupe and will attempt to recapture the magic of the original BMW 8 Series that launched in 1989, according to auto enthusiast reports.
