BMW Premieres Concept Z4 Roadster, Displays Concept 8 Series in Monterey

This week, BMW took the wraps off two sports car concepts during California’s Monterey Car Week. The German automaker gave a first glimpse of the Concept Z4 compact premium sporty car on the lawn at Pebble Beach’s Concours d’Elegance and reintroduced the Concept 8 Series large premium sporty coupe that debuted in Italy in May. Both concepts foreshadow production models set to debut next year and will have limited display time at the Monterey, CA, event from Thursday, Aug. 17 through Sunday, Aug. 20.

The BMW Concept Z4 Roadster envisions a modern open 2-seater with a dynamic front end, striking flanks, and clean-cut tail end to generate a “sense of power and emotion,” according to BMW’s senior vice president and design chief Adrian van Hooydonk. The concept takes cues from a classic roadster—including a long wheelbase, low-slung stretched silhouette, and compact rear end. The car is set up to allow the driver to sit closer to the center of the car than in previous BMW 2-seaters. The car’s profile is a wedge with large, built-in rollover head humps. Inside, the car is a candy bar with separate rich orange, brown, and black leather upholstered seats. Dark metallic orange exterior paint emphasizes sculpted character lines.

BMW also showcased in Monterey its fresh, sleek, and edgy Concept 8 Series Coupe that launches in 2018. The number 8 for roadster and series are BMW labels for sports performance. The 8 Series large premium sporty car is intended to recapture the excitement of the original 8 Series that was introduced in 1989. New design elements in the Concept 8 Series feature crisper lines and powerful sculpting to create what BMW officials call “a driver’s car.”

In addition to exhibition events, on Saturday, Aug. 19, BMW will run two classic race cars in the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion to be driven by BMW officials. The renowned #25 1975 BMW 3.0 CSL IMSA Group 4 will be driven by outgoing BMW of North America President Ludwig Willisch, while #21 1972 Alpina BMW 2002ti will be raced by BMW’s design chief.
