Part of I-70 closed in western Kansas due to crashes
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Due to blowing snow, limited visibility and vehicles blocking the roadway, the Kansas Department of Transportation has closed westbound Interstate 70 between Hays and the Kansas/Colorado state line and eastbound Interstate 70 between the Kansas/Colorado state line and WaKeeney.
KDOT says there have been a number of crashes between Goodland and Colby due to the wintry conditions. KDOT warns there is limited parking west of Salina.
The Kansas Highway Patrol and county sheriff’s offices have been dealing with vehicles sliding off roads since early Monday morning.
KDOT says road conditions in northwest Kansas are snow-packed and icy with reduced visibility in some areas.
The National Weather Service warned drivers to be prepared for hazardous travel conditions in parts of Kansas on Monday.
“The Kansas Department of Transportation asks motorists not to use secondary routes to avoid interstate closures and are asked to delay travel if possible,” said KDOT. “Those currently on the roadways should find shelter at a safe location until conditions improve.”
Accumulating snow driven by wind gusts has already reduced visibility and slick roads in northwest Kansas. For the latest Kansas road conditions, click here.
