Beach Bites: On the Half Shell

MURRELLS INLET, S.C. (WBTW) — Summer is nearing, which means it is the time of year to enjoy your food and drinks outside.

At On the Half Shell in Murrells Inlet, you can chow down on everything from a sushi roll to a meatloaf while you enjoy the Carolina summer. All of the prices on the menu end with “1/2,” hence the ‘half’ in the name, but rest assured you are not getting half the meal.

“I think our food speaks for itself,” Chef ‘CC’ Fulk said. “Where else are you gonna get two seafood platters for 16 and a half bucks?”

Fulk worked a corporate job for most of her life before she stepped into the role of head chef. It is a job she says is the perfect fit for her.

“I love to do the country cooking thing,” Fulk said. “I’ve had great response from it.”

It is hard to complain when the menu is so expansive. On the Half Shell has shrimp and grits, bacon, barbecue meatloaf, creamy, cheesy scalloped potatoes, sushi and, of course, oysters ‘on the half shell.’

Fulk said customers inspire the menu, so if you want something unique, just ask. She’s pretty creative. She said she once had a customer ask for ‘chicken cordon bleu sliders,’ so she whipped them up on the fly. The response was so great the sliders landed themselves a permanent place on the menu.

To the staff members, the customers are more than just people who come and go.

“They’re everything to us,” Fulk said. “They’re what keeps us going, and we wouldn’t be here without them. We love them. They are our family.”

For Fulk, On the Half Shell is more than just a job.

“It means everything to me,” she said.

On the Half Shell is in Murrells Inlet off Highway 17 near Wachesaw Road.
