Baby Reindeer star and creator Richard Gadd has called out online speculation about who inspired the show's characters.

The hit seven-part Netflix series is based on Gadd's harrowing real-life experiences of being stalked by a woman who repeatedly turned up at his place of work, his comedy shows and even outside his home. It stars the comedian as Donny, a fictionalised version of himself.

Many of the show's other characters are also based on people Gadd knew in real life, including Donny's stalker Martha (played by Jessica Gunning) and love interest Teri (Nava Mau).

While Gadd changed names and specific storyline details to protect the identities of the real-life people who inspired the series, online sleuths have still been speculating about who the characters could be based on.

Taking to his Instagram Stories on Monday (April 22), Gadd called out audience speculation about real-life influences for the show, noting that writer and director Sean Foley had been "unfairly caught up in" it.

"Hi everyone. People I love, have worked with, and admire (including Sean Foley) are unfairly caught up in speculation," he wrote.

"Please don't speculate on who any of the real-life people could be. That's not the point of our show. Lots of love, Richard x X."

Mau recently discussed the "real" element of her Baby Reindeer character Teri, a trans woman who begins dating Donny.

"When I read [the script], I could tell that Richard really loved her, whoever inspired this character," she explained during a Q&A screening with Digital Spy and other press.

"I think I knew that it was based on real life and it seemed really important to show people that trans women exist in real life and in relationships with real people. I could see Richard's heart in the writing and I hope that people will see it too."

Meanwhile, Gunning opened up about the challenges of playing Donny's stalker Martha, sharing that she was with the character "all the time" in her head because she "wanted to do the part justice so much".

Baby Reindeer is now available to watch on Netflix.
