Authorities investigating ‘swatting’ incident after false homicide report in Coffee County

COFFEE COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Coffee County law enforcement responded to a tip about a potential homicide Wednesday afternoon, only to discover it was a “swatting” call.

The Coffee County Sheriff’s Department said a call came in on Wednesday, April 24 about a possible homicide in the Toliver Lake Road area.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they secured the area, but after clearing the home and talking with the occupant, they determined it was a “swatting” call, according to officials.

“These types of calls are malicious in nature and take valuable resources away from true emergency calls,” the sheriff’s department wrote on Facebook. “These types of calls also scare and terrorize unexpecting individuals as in the case of the lone young woman that was occupying this residence.”

Coffee County authorities said they take these types of calls seriously, so an investigation is underway to determine the origin and identity of the caller.
