Augusta man arrested after injuring CCSO Lt., leading officers on brief chase

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF) – A man has been arrested after injuring a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office lieutenant and leading officers on a brief police chase.

According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Bobby Dwyane Burnett, 26, of Augusta, walked into the CCSO Headquarters building on County Camp Road in Appling around 2 P.M. with, what authorities say, the sole purpose of requesting a background check.

According to authorities, it was discovered that Burnett had an active Probation Violation warrant, and while leaving the building and walking to his vehicle, Burnett was confronted by two deputies which included Lieutenant Brandon Thacker.

According to officers, Burnett proceeded to drive away dragging Lt. Thacker down County Camp Road for approximately 100 yards before Lt. Thacker managed to break free from the vehicle.

After dispatchers in the Real Time Crime Center sent out an alert, authorities say a deputy spotted Burnett’s vehicle on Columbia Road at South Old Belair Road, and a brief pursuit ensued with the Georgia State Patrol assisting by pitting Burnett’s vehicle on Warren Road in Richmond County.

According to CCSO, Burnett has been charged with Aggravated Assault involving a Law Enforcement officer, Obstruction of a Law Enforcement Officer and Fleeing/Attempting to Elude.

Authorities state that ambulance and fire rescue units provided medical attention on scene, and Lieutenant Thacker was transported to AU Medical Center and has been listed to be in stable condition.
