Athens police: Baby died while sleeping with mother

The body of an infant will undergo a medical examination to determine the cause of death after the baby was found dead Saturday in bed with his mother, according to Athens-Clarke police.

The baby’s death was reported at about 2:30 p.m. through a 911 call by the mother from her home in a neighborhood off Jefferson River Road, police reported.

The 25-year-old mother told police and rescue workers that she and the baby fell asleep on the couch and when she awoke she found him unresponsive.

Police said the baby was lying on his mother’s left side away from the back cushions of the couch. The mother said she was unaware of any medical issues of her child. The child was reported deceased after arriving at a local hospital.

No foul play is suspected, but authorities are awaiting medical tests to determine the cause.
