AST Weather Blog: Three tornadoes confirmed in Arkansas over the past weekend

It was an especially active weekend for tornadoes across the Midwest, resulting in over 150 new tornadoes. The hardest hit states were Iowa (+40), Nebraska (+36), Oklahoma (+22), Kansas (+21), Texas (+19) and Missouri (+17).

Overall, Arkansas avoided the worst of our most recent outbreak. However, we did add 3 new tornadoes on Sunday night. This puts our 2024 count up to 7.

Two of those touched down in southern Lafayette County, within miles of the Louisiana state line. Both of these were rated EF-1, the first one with max winds around 90 mph and the second one up to 110 mph. There were no fatalities or injuries with either of these, thankfully.

A few hours later, around 10:18 p.m., a third tornado touched down in northwestern Arkansas in Carroll County, just to the west of Carrollton. Below is a screenshot of our sister station, KNWA’s tower cam from Gaither Mountain. As you can see, the tornado is very difficult to see in the night sky without the illumination of frequent lightning.

The specifics are still unknown with this particular twister. But the National Weather Service plans to have that information soon once their damage surveys are complete.

Of course, the biggest takeaway from all this is that we did not have any loss of life here in the Natural State.
