AST Weather Blog: Identifying your tornado safety plan in advance of incoming severe risks

In the next few days, with multiple rounds of severe weather possible, we’re going to be showing you plenty of maps. But as we prepare for the possibility of tornadoes, one of the most important maps that you should consider is the map of your home.

Now is the time to identify your safe place rather than scrambling or panicking the moment a tornado warning is issued. Ideally, you want to be within steps of that place when the risk is greatest. That way, if a warning is issued; you can swiftly take life-saving action.

Remember: No mobile home is safe in the event of a tornado. You need to be in a site-built home, in an interior room on the lowest floor. This may be a bathroom or closet, or perhaps under the stairs. But if one of those rooms happens to border an exterior wall, it is not safe. You must put as many walls between you and the outdoors to protect yourself from flying debris.

You will also want to cover up with blankets, pillows or even a mattress. Another thing to consider is wearing a helmet. According to FEMA, severe head injury is the leading cause of death in a tornado. So protecting your head is vital.

Hopefully you’ll never need to take these life-saving steps. But being prepared rather than scared will give you the peace of mind you need to avoid making poor decisions in a moment of panic.
