Assault at a Macon store left victim in critical condition. Suspect faces battery charge

A suspect has been arrested in an assault that left the victim in critical condition, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Gang Unit said it arrested Antoine Joseph McCall, 43, at the intersection of Walnut Street and Ward Street. The arrest came after deputies responded to a call on Tuesday reporting a 57-year-old man having been assaulted and admitted to Atrium Health Navicent in critical condition.

Deputies said it was reported that the victim was involved in an altercation that occurred at the Corner Grocery Store in Macon on April 14.

Upon further review of the incident, investigators said they were able to confirm the assault occurred at the store and identified McCall. McCall was also wanted in Bibb County for a Superior Court probation violation.

He is being charged with aggravated battery and being held without bond.

According to medical staff, the victim was still listed in critical condition Thursday.
