Alleged gang member in Toccoa shooting of two people found hiding in Athens

A Stephens County man, described by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation as a member of a street gang, was arrested recently in Athens on warrants that alleged he gunned down two people in Toccoa in March.

Cornelius Devaughn Curry, 20, was arrested April 18 on four counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during a crime, along with two counts of aggravated battery and four counts of violating the state’s gang prevention act, according to information released by the GBI.

The GBI reported that Curry was identified as the suspect who shot two people on March 31 during a drive-by shooting on West Whitmire Street, located a few blocks from downtown Toccoa.

The shooting occurred about 12:30 a.m. and both victims were treated and released from a hospital with wounds to their torso, according to the report.

Toccoa police sought help in the investigation by the GBI’s Gang Task Force and an investigation led investigators to track Curry to a duplex home on Vintage Court in Athens. The cul-de-sac street is located in a neighborhood off Cedar Shoals Drive.

The GBI, while charging Curry with the gang act, did not disclose which gang the suspect is alleged to have an affiliation. Some gangs, such as the Gangster Disciples, are known to have members in Athens and Toccoa.

Prior to the arrest, a search warrant was obtained for the residence and a search was made with assistance of Athens-Clarke police. Police spokesman Geoff Gilland said Tuesday no local charges were filed as a result of the arrest.

The GBI noted that more arrests are expected as a result of the investigation. Curry remains in the Stephens County Jail, where he has been denied bond.
