Alabama tornado count lower than last year to date

April is the climatological peak for tornadoes across Alabama but this year, we’ve seen way fewer than last year to date. In fact, the state of Alabama has seen 17 tornadoes so far in 2024. This is compared to the 54 we had already had in the state last year at this time. That’s more than three times the number!

The weather patterns, for the most part, have been setting up in a way that has prevented the ingredients needed for severe weather, including tornadoes from developing. We’re thankful, as we still have the rest of the spring season to get through. You can see how many tornadoes the state has had per month and how it compares to last year in the graphic below.

North Alabama has had three tornadoes from January to April this year. The 10-year average (2014-2023) is 13.6. The entire state averages 64.3 tornadoes (2014-2023). Below is a look at how many tornadoes occur in the state by month with records dating 1950-2023.
