Abilene Public Library announces new American Sign Language and Emotional Learning kits

The Abilene Public Library announced the release of new American Sign Language learning sets available to adult cardholders for checkout. The ASL kits can be found at the Main Branch Library and offer a new way for helping the community learn American Sign Language.

Each ASL kit is designed for beginner learners of various age levels and include the following:
● Instructional DVD
● Practice flash cards
● Activity book
● Hands on activity

American Sign Language kits will be available starting March 5th, and more information about what each kit includes can be found by visiting the online catalog. The ASL kits can be checked out at the Main Library, or placed on hold to be picked up at other APL locations. The ASL kit
checkouts can be renewed and the kits can be returned to the circulation desk at any APL location.

The Abilene Public Library is also offering two new Social and Emotional Learning kits for children from preschool through 3rd grade.

This new kit highlights books focused on recognizing emotions and feelings and is
paired with educational toys that support the development of social and emotional competence. The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) defines social and emotional learning (SEL) as “the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions” (CASEL, 2024).

The Social and Emotional Learning kits are located in the children’s section of the Main branch in the themed kit/backpack area on the first floor.

The kits can be checked out and returned at the circulation desk and are available for adult cardholders to check out for three weeks.
