America, Tim Kaine has heard your dad jokes, and he thinks they’re funny. The Virginia senator made his campaign debut last weekend at a Miami rally where Hillary Clinton officially named him as her running mate. Based on the stream of jokes that flooded Twitter Wednesday night, one of the biggest takeaways from Kaine’s DNC speech was that Clinton’s running mate is really just a sweet suburban dad.
The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said prosecutors could pursue charges that Menendez accepted campaign donations and gifts, including a stay in a Caribbean villa and private jet flights from a wealthy friend, Florida ophthalmologist Salomon Melgen, in exchange for using his office to lobby on his behalf. "Members of Congress are not to be 'super-citizens' immune from criminal liability," Circuit Judge Thomas Ambro wrote for a three-judge panel of the Philadelphia-based appeals court.
Courts dealt setbacks on Friday to Republican efforts in three states to restrict voting, blocking a North Carolina law requiring photo identification, loosening a similar measure in Wisconsin and halting strict citizenship requirements in Kansas. The rulings came as the 2016 election moves into its final phase, with Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton locked in a high-stakes presidential race and control of the U.S. Senate possibly hanging in the balance. North Carolina is one of about a dozen swing states in the presidential race, while Wisconsin has voted Democratic in recent presidential elections and Kansas has been solidly Republican.
China, Australia and Malaysia announced last week that the more than two-year-long hunt for the missing flight would be suspended once the current search area in the Indian Ocean has been completely scoured, something expected by the end of the year. The debris, which was found on Pemba Island off the coast of Tanzania, was analyzed by experts at the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, which is heading up the search for the plane in a remote stretch of ocean far off Australia’s west coast. Several pieces of the doomed airliner have washed ashore in various spots around the southern Indian Ocean since it vanished more than two years ago with 239 people on board.
The old Sandy Hook Elementary School was demolished in 2013 after a crazed gunman fatally shot 20 children and six educators in December 2010 in just five minutes before killing himself. The new Sandy Hook School, which will feature heavy-duty windows and sophisticated video surveillance, was built with a $50 million grant from the state of Connecticut in the small leafy town of Newtown, two and a half hours by car northeast of New York City. "Despite its birth from a horrible tragedy, Sandy Hook School will be a place full of laughter, love, and learning," Newtown First Selectman Pat Llodra said.

North Korea says the United States has effectively declared war after US officials placed its leader Kim Jong Un on a list of sanctioned individuals who have committed human rights abuses. Han Song Ryol, the North Korean Foreign Ministry’s director-general of the US affairs department, added in an interview with the Associated Press that if planned joint US-South Korea war games south of the Demilitarized Zone went ahead next month, it would likely result in a vicious showdown for which the United States would be responsible. On the night Hillary Clinton made history by accepting the Democratic Party’s nomination for the presidency, the world wasn’t just watching at home passively as it had in past elections, but speaking out and reacting in real time over social media. Data from Instagram, Twitter and other services also indicate which moments from the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia resonated with the American people. For instance, the picture that Clinton shared of herself and President Obama embracing after he delivered an impassioned speech in support of her candidacy Wednesday night became the most-liked Instagram photo (146,000) from any candidate in this presidential race.
A Dallas meteorogist has resigned after writing a racially insensitive Facebook post bashing the Democratic National Convention. Bob Goosmann was a weatherman at KRLD when he posted about the DNC speeches by the so-called "Mothers of the Movement," such as Eric Garner's mother, on Wednesday. The DNC parading the mothers of slain thugs around on their stage has me furious," read the post, which has since disappeared.
Genetically modified wheat not approved for sale or commercial production in the United States has been found growing in a field in Washington state, agriculture officials said Friday, posing a possible risk to trade with countries concerned about engineered food. The Food and Drug Administration says genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, are safe and little scientific concern exists about the safety of those on the market. On Friday, President Barack Obama signed into law a bill that will require labeling of genetically modified ingredients for the first time.
Perched on a forested hillside in the distant outskirts of Istanbul, the town of Ballica seems a world removed from the bloodshed of a failed military coup that killed hundreds of people in Turkey just two weeks ago. Four days ago, a soldier who fought to overthrow the country’s elected government was buried here, the first to be interred in the rocky, barren enclosure. Since the coup on the night of July 15, Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has moved swiftly to memorialize the bravery of anti-coup protesters, planning public monuments and rechristening Istanbul’s Bosphorus Bridge — where scores of unarmed protesters were killed by rebel soldiers — as the “July 15th Martyrs’ Bridge.” The cemetery, built on the orders of Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbas, has proved a controversial add-on to the list of post-coup public works.
International Airlines Group, owner of BA and Iberia, lowered its annual earnings forecast on Friday following the recent Brexit vote. The group, which also owns Ireland's Aer Lingus and Spain's Iberia, predicted that operating profit would see "low double-digit percentage growth" in 2016. "In the lead up to the vote we witnessed softer than expected trading, principally with UK corporates,” said IAG chief executive Willie Walsh on a conference call.
By Michael Fiala CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA, Calif. (Reuters) - A deadly blaze near California's Big Sur coast could widen to more than five times its current size and has destroyed some 60 homes, threatened hundreds of others and spurred mass evacuations, authorities said on Saturday. The so-called Soberanes Fire, which started on July 22 and is burning just south of the oceanside town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, has roared through nearly 32,000 acres (13,000 hectares) of drought-parched chaparral, grass and timber in the Los Padres National Forest. The blaze is estimated to have a final size of 170,000 acres (265 square miles), according to California Interagency Incident Management Team 1, which is comprised of federal, state and local authorities.

It seems that the strong start to the year was another false dawn for the eurozone economy and that the European Central Bank will have more to do in the months ahead to shore up growth. New figures released Friday confirmed that the eurozone, which is made up of 19 countries from Ireland to the west to Cyprus in the east, suffered a sizeable slowdown in the second quarter of the year despite a number of stimulus measures that the European Central Bank has thrown at it. In its first estimate for the April to June period, Eurostat, the EU's statistics agency, said growth across the single currency bloc eased to a quarterly rate of 0.3 percent from the previous quarter's 0.6 percent.
Mark Salter, former chief of staff to Sen. John McCain, has written an essay for Real Clear Politics on why he cannot vote for Donald Trump. It deserves note for the long-term record because this is not how associates of a party’s former nominee usually talk about the current one, and because of its insistence on the importance of tax returns. Could it be that a major party nominee for president is beholden to Russia’s leader and might compromise the security interests of the U.S. and our allies to maintain that relationship? We don’t know the answer….

Eight militants were "neutralised" in the area after an air force operation, the army added.

Here's how employers say they perceive workers age 50 and older. Many older workers have spent decades in their industry.
Lodge managers and cafe owners along California's dramatic Big Sur coast were looking Friday at a summer of jittery guests and cancelled bookings after fire officials warned that crews will likely be battling a wildfire raging in steep, forested ridges just to the north for another month. Big Sur establishments were already reporting as much as a 50 percent drop in business, said Stan Russell, executive director of the chamber of commerce. The week-old blaze a few miles north of Big Sur had been blamed for one death, that of a bulldozer operator working the fire line.
