Karla Ortiz, an 11-year-old girl from Nevada, told the Democratic National Convention on Monday night that Hillary Clinton told her not to worry about her parents getting deported, because she would help. Ortiz, a U.S. citizen born in Las Vegas, was accompanied by her mother, Francisca Ortiz. Ortiz and Clinton met in February at a roundtable in Vegas, when the little girl told Clinton she was worried her parents would be deported.
Police are trying to determine how an 8-year-old boy wandered away unnoticed from a city-run summer camp at a Boston beach and ended up dead, his body found five hours later in the water. Dealing with a tragic death like this," Boston Police Commissioner William Evans told reporters at a Tuesday evening news conference. Kyzr Willis was last seen around 2 p.m. Tuesday near the L Street Bathhouse at Carson Beach in the city's South Boston neighborhood.
Last week, WikiLeaks posted a series of emails from the Democratic National Committee, with all sorts of embarrassing details for the DNC, and a bunch of passport and social security numbers of supporters. Rumors have been flying around that the hack was the work of the Russian government, and now the FBI has given those rumors some credibility by announcing an investigation. The fact that the DNC was hacked has been known since May, when DNC documents started being published by some news outlets.
A Colorado man was driving his family to the airport for a surprise Disney vacation when cops say a suspected drunk driver demolished their plans. Ryan Bragazzi was taking his fiance and two daughters — ages 5 and 7 — to Denver International Airport last week when the surprise for the girls became a nightmare for the whole family. As the family sat in a traffic jam behind one crash reportedly caused by a DUI, police say the family's vehicle was struck from behind by another suspected drunk driver.
The Kremlin on Wednesday dismissed allegations Russia had hacked Democratic Party emails as "horror stories" dreamt up by U.S. politicians, saying it never interfered in other countries' election campaigns. "Moscow is at pains to avoid any words that could be interpreted as direct or indirect interference in the election process," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a conference call with reporters. "... We see that the Russian card is in the red corner on the writing table of all Washington politicians during the election campaign, and that very often they make it a trump card in their game." Peskov was responding after U.S. President Barack Obama in an interview with NBC News said it was possible Russia would try to influence the U.S. presidential election after a leak of Democratic National Committee emails that experts have blamed on Russian hackers.
Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has ordered an investigation into the treatment of children in detention after the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) aired footage it obtained showing abuses by guards. Interviewed on ABC radio Tuesday, Turnbull said he was “deeply shocked — shocked and appalled by the images of mistreatment of children,” Reuters reports. ABC’s Four Corners program on Monday, entitled “Australia’s Shame,” broadcast CCTV footage from Don Dale Youth Detention Centre in Darwin, in the country’s Northern Territory, shot between 2010 and 2014.
As Seattle's minimum wage rises toward $15 an hour, research from the University of Washington suggests that the city has not seen the major business closures and job losses that opponents of the increase predicted, nor has it seen a significant improvement in the lives of workers that proponents envisioned. As one of the first major cities to pass a $15 minimum wage ordinance, Seattle has been something of a test case for other communities considering measures to boost wages for low-income workers. Business owners have cautioned that forcing employers to increase minimum wages too quickly could actually have the opposite effect, by forcing businesses to reduce worker hours or scale back hiring.
Unfortunately, we can't go back in time to sample the oxygen content of prehistoric air. The mass spectrometer measured the oxygen content of the prehistoric air and found that the air 800 million years ago was about 10 percent oxygen.
The number of young kids in Colorado who accidentally consume marijuana has increased since buying the drug for recreational use became legal there in 2014, according to a new study. During 2009, before the recreational use of marijuana was legalized in Colorado, only nine calls were made to a regional poison center regarding kids accidentally ingesting or inhaling marijuana, researchers found. "We anticipated that the rate would likely go up" after the recreational use of marijuana was legalized in Colorado, said study co-author Dr. Genie Roosevelt, a pediatrician at Denver Health Medical Center.
In an emotional, soaring and pointedly political speech on the first night of the Democratic National Convention tonight, first lady Michelle Obama braided together her case for her husband’s legacy, her support for the woman who is trying to succeed him and her repudiation of the man who is trying to defeat her. The role of a president, she said, is to create the future for the next generation, and it was that goal that guided Barack Obama’s presidency. Michelle Obama has not always felt this warmly about Hillary Clinton, who ran hard against Barack Obama in 2008.

By Humeyra Pamuk and Gareth Jones ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Just weeks ago, Commander Adem Huduti was inspecting Turkish troops on the Syrian border and being praised in the media for his role in the fight against Islamic State and Kurdish militants. Now, the head of Turkey's second army, responsible for its borders with Syria and Iraq, is in prison in Duzce, some 216 km (134 miles) east of Istanbul, the most senior serving general arrested for suspected involvement in a failed military coup. "The Turkish military is now a broken force and it will take years for it to heal," said Aaron Stein, resident fellow at the Washington-based Atlantic Council, whose research focuses on Turkey and regional security.

The hack of the Democratic National Committee’s email servers and the subsequent leak of embarrassing internal documents appear almost certainly to have been carried out by Russian intelligence agencies, making it the most serious case yet of Kremlin interference in U.S. politics. The confirmation — long suspected by many in the Bernie Sanders camp — that at least some DNC officials were on Team Hillary over the course of the Democratic primary has divided the party on the verge of its nominating convention and alienated Sanders’s base. If it hasn’t convinced them to back Donald Trump, it’s at least given them second thoughts about voting for Clinton.
During a convention marked by rabid dissent, protests and walkouts, there was one thing Tuesday on which Bernie Sanders supporters and Hillary Clinton supporters could agree: Black Lives Matter. In three emotional speeches Tuesday night, black mothers who had lost their sons to violence endorsed Hillary Clinton as the candidate they thought would be most likely to soothe the racial divisions that contributed to the deaths of their children. The grieving mothers, known as Mothers of the Movement, have previously met with Clinton and appeared in an ad for her campaign.
In court papers, lawyers for the student, Gavin Grimm, urged the Supreme Court to leave in place a lower court's order in favor of Grimm while the litigation goes on. The case is the first time the fight over transgender bathroom rights has reached the Supreme Court. Last year, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) sued on behalf of Grimm to challenge the Gloucester County School Board's bathroom policy, which requires transgender students to use alternative restroom facilities.

A court near Berlin on Tuesday convicted a 33-year-old German security guard of kidnapping, abusing and murdering two small boys — including a child refugee — and sentenced the man to life in prison. The Potsdam regional court said Silvio S., whose surname wasn't given due to German privacy rules, won't automatically be up for release after 15 years because of the seriousness of his crime. The disappearance of a 6-year-old German child named Elias from near his home in Potsdam last July prompted a massive police search.
At least 13 people were killed on Tuesday in twin bombings near UN and African Union buildings by Mogadishu's airport, police said, in what the jihadist Shabaab group claimed as a suicide attack. The Al-Qaeda aligned Shabaab group is blamed for a string of bloody assaults in Somalia and neighbouring Kenya, and is fighting to overthrow Mogadishu's internationally-backed government. "At least 13 people were confirmed to have died in two explosions, one of the vehicles went off near a security checkpoint and another close to a UN compound," said Bishaar Abdi Gedi, a police official.
By Kate Kelland LONDON (Reuters) - Dutch men and Latvian women are the planet's tallest people but Iranian men and South Korean women have grown the fastest in the last century, according to the largest ever study of height around the world. Americans, once among the world's tallest people, have dropped from having men and women at 3rd and 4th in the global height rankings a 100 years earlier, to placing 37th and 42nd respectively in 2014. The research, led by scientists at Imperial College London and published in the journal eLife, also found some nations have stopped growing over the past 30 to 40 years, despite having spurts at the start of the century studied.
