$7.8 million lottery ticket sold in this small Colorado city

DENVER (KDVR) — When someone strikes it rich on the lottery, it often feels like the ticket was sold in a big city. But that wasn’t the case Wednesday night when someone who bought a ticket in a Colorado city with less than 3,000 people won several million dollars.

The Colorado Lottery said someone who purchased the ticket in Wray became a whole lot richer when they hit the Colorado Lotto+ jackpot. The winning ticket was worth $7,860,854 and was sold at a local 7-Eleven.

What happens to unclaimed lottery tickets in Colorado?

The Colorado Lotto+ is an in-state jackpot game, and according to the Colorado Lottery, has created over 425 millionaires in the state. To play the game, players choose six numbers, and the prizes are awarded to those matching three to six of those numbers.

The lucky winner matched all six numbers Wednesday night: 7-16-23-28-37-40.

With a population of only a few thousand people, you might be wondering where Wray is. The city is on the Eastern Plains and only about 10 miles from the Nebraska border and 25 miles from the Kansas border.

Wray is also the county seat for Yuma County.

The Colorado Lottery allows winners to remain anonymous, but as the lottery spokesperson said, that can be hard in small towns.

While it’s not guaranteed that the winner lives in Wray, it’s still unique to find a winning ticket in such a small city.

The next Colorado Lotto+ drawing will be on Saturday when the jackpot resets to $1 million.
