UPDATE: Police share new details on deadly Springfield crash

Update on April 8 at 12:32 p.m.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The Springfield Police Department has shared more information on a deadly car crash that took place Sunday afternoon.

Police responded to the area of East Lake Shore Drive and Sycamore Lane at 12:51 p.m. They determined that a car was traveling east on East Lake Shore Drive when it veered off the road and hit a tree.

The driver was taken to Springfield Memorial Hospital and treated for minor injuries. Meanwhile, the passenger — whom the Sangamon County Coroner identified as a 56-year-old Wood River woman — was taken to HSHS St. John’s Hospital. She was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The Sangamon County Coroner has announced the death of a Wood River woman following a car crash in Springfield on Sunday.

Coroner Jim Allmon said the crash took place on East Lake Shore Drive. The 56-year-old woman was a passenger in the vehicle. EMS rushed the victim to HSHS St. John’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 2:12 p.m.

The victim’s identity will be withheld until family can be notified, Allmon said. In the meantime, an autopsy has been scheduled.

The death remains under the investigation of the Coroner and the Springfield Police Department. WCIA has reached out to Springfield Police and awaits more details on the incident.
