SpaceX rocket launches on Starlink mission after hours of delay Wednesday at Cape Canaveral

Liftoff took three hours and 42 minutes longer than anticipated. But a thrice-delayed SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket finally launched from pad 39A during a balmy Wednesday afternoon at NASA's Kennedy Space Center.

SpaceX had originally scheduled the Starlink 6-56 mission launch for 11 a.m. EDT, but three postponements pushed the Falcon 9's fiery liftoff back to 2:42 p.m. The rocket carried 23 Starlink satellites up into low-Earth orbit.

SpaceX Starlink satellites to launch on Sunday night from Cape Canaveral, Florida

With the launch of Boeing's crewed Starliner being delayed until no earlier than May 17th, due to a faulty oxygen valve on the ULA Atlas V rocket, locals and those sticking around the Cape will still have another chance to watch a rocket launch.

According to a geospatial navigational warning, SpaceX is targeting Sunday night for the launch of its next batch of Starlink satellites. Currently, SpaceX has yet to confirm the existence of this mission or which Falcon 9 booster will be used.

Into the night: SpaceX launches Starlink satellites Sunday from Cape Canaveral, Florida

After an initial delay of 42 minutes, SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket lifted off at 8:53 p.m. Sunday night from Cape Canaveral Space Launch Complex 40, kicking off what promises to be another busy launch week on the Space Coast.

The bright night launch delighted onlookers. Rising into the Florida night sky, the rocket's payload included the next batch of 23 Starlink satellites: Starlink 6-58.

What's behind latest delay of Boeing Starliner launch from Florida?

After making it to the launch pad earlier this month only to face an issue with the Atlas V rocket, this week's planned launch of Boeing’s Starliner from Cape Canaveral is delayed yet again − now the inaugural crewed flight is set for no earlier than Tuesday, May 21st.

Originally set for May 6, the launch was scrubbed when a faulty oxygen valve on the Atlas V was discovered with almost two hours left until launch. The crew was in the process of getting in the spacecraft when teams called off the launch to investigate the valve.
