2nd Chippewa courthouse security guard approved

CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – The Chippewa County Board officially approved the hiring of a second courthouse security guard this week.

Sheriff Travis Hakes said a security study was held previously that found there were multiple safety positions that needed to be filled.

The first of those positions was filled in 2018, but other positions were not addressed until Tuesday’s approval.

The new security guard will be on the first floor of the courthouse.

Sheriff Hakes said the new position will help stop any potential threats before they can reach the rest of the building.

“Any time that you have increased foot patrol and increased visibility, I think it’s going to increase safety and security, which I think the employees that work in that building and the guests that come to the building will appreciate,” Hakes said.

Sheriff Hakes said in order to fill the position, a new jailer needs to be hired first. Then the courthouse security position will be filled by one of the county’s 30 jailers.
