24-Year-Old Man Found Dead After Swimming in California Reservoir: 'We Will Miss You'

A 24-year-old man drowned in a Northern California reservoir over the weekend, authorities said.

Oscar Rafael Coello-Flores was swimming in the Woodward Reservoir on Sunday, April 28, and was trying to swim from the shore of Mountain View Point to “Area-A” when "he appeared to grow fatigued and became overcome by the elements as he struggled to keep above the water’s surface," the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post on April 22.

Deputies were dispatched to Mountain View Point on a report of a swimmer in distress around 1:51 p.m. local time.

"The Special Vehicle Operations Unit, as well as paramedics, air support, fire department personnel, and the Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, responded to assist with the search," authorities said.

But Coello-Flores' body was not located "in time," with authorities further noting "he unfortunately drowned approximately 45 feet away from the shore of Mountain View Point."

"Investigators with the Coroner’s Office responded and took over the death investigation," the sheriff's office said in the Facebook post. "A more comprehensive forensic autopsy will be completed in the coming days."

Following his death, the victim's aunt said in a translated post on Facebook, "We will miss you ... we will remember you forever."

The sheriff’s office provided water safety tips that included moderating alcohol intake when swimming or boating, swimming with a partner and wearing a life vest.

It's unclear what led to Coello-Flores' death at this time or if any of these factors played a role.

PEOPLE reached out to the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office for comment, but they did not immediately respond.
