2-week-old baby abducted, later found abandoned in Augusta carjacking

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office is investigating an apparent car theft turned kidnapping Wednesday night that involved a 2-week-old baby.

Just after 9 p.m. Wednesday, Richmond County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the 2100 block of A Street for a car theft with a child inside, according to a news release.

A woman was unloading her car when the suspect got in and drove off, according to the release. The woman's two-week-old child was still in the car.

Deputies immediately began searching for the car and child, finding both approximately 15 minutes later near Lake Olmstead, according to the release.

The suspect abandoned the vehicle and the child was turned back over to the mother, uninjured, according to the sheriff's office.

No arrests had been announced as of Thursday afternoon.
