2 teens suspected of shooting at Phoenix officer indicted

A Maricopa County grand jury indicted two teenagers after officials say they attempted to steal a vehicle from two women before shooting at a responding Phoenix police officer.

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office said the teens —17-year-old Mathew Rodriguez and 19-year-old Jamiah Mower — approached the women at about 11:30 p.m. near 35th and Southern avenues along with another unidentified minor and demanded the vehicle at gunpoint.

The agency said Officer Harold Boswell responded to the area to help the women when Rodriguez and Mower fired at him. It did not say whether any of the rounds struck Boswell.

Rodriguez was arrested and booked into a Maricopa County jail a day after the violent encounter while Mower was arrested in Las Vegas days later and extradited to Maricopa County. Rodriguez is being charged as an adult. The unidentified minor is being prosecuted in juvenile court, MCAO said.

Rodriguez and Mower were indicted on numerous felonies including aggravated assault, kidnapping and attempt to commit armed robbery. Mower is being held on a $250,000 cash-only bond while Rodriguez is being held on a $150,000 secured appearance bond.

“Officer Boswell is a hero who was trying to help two victims being threatened at gunpoint,” Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said in a written statement. “These defendants are a young adult and a juvenile facing very serious felonies, but the danger to Officer Boswell and the victims cannot be understated.”
