17-year-old arrested in fatal shooting of 21-year-old in South End: CMPD

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A teenager has been charged with murder in connection to the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old man in South End, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police announced.

The 17-year-old juvenile suspect, who will not be named, was taken into custody earlier this month. The teen has been transferred to the NC Department of Juvenile Justice.

Authorities said the deadly shooting happened just after 7 p.m. Saturday, March 9, in the 400 block of Fairwood Avenue. As officers arrived at the scene, they located Abijah Barkley, 21, with life-threatening injuries. Once at the hospital, staff discovered Barkley had been shot.

Barkley was pronounced deceased at the hospital. His family has been notified of this month’s arrest.

The investigation into this case remains active and ongoing, CMPD said.
