16th annual Palmetto Police Motorcycle Skills Competition underway in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Motorcycle units from across the U.S. and Canada are competing in the 16th Annual Palmetto Police Motorcycle Skills Competition, which kicked off Wednesday in Myrtle Beach.

The competition at the Myrtle Beach Mall is a way to showcase and enhance the skills of law enforcement motorcycle riders. Their skills are tested through a series of performance under pressure events. The event has raised and donated more than $125,000 to Camp Happy Days over the past 16 years. The camp is for children of all ages who are battling cancer.

Many people came out to the first day of practice to watch the riders and see their skills.

They make it look so easy, so you think you could jump on one of those and do it and you wouldn’t make it five feet,” spectator Byron Easton said. “But they are so skilled. It’s fun to watch them and appreciate what they do.”

The competition is open to the public.

Below is a list of the events:

THURSDAY: Practice from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.; challenge ride at 1 p.m.

FRIDAY: Practice 7 a.m. until noon; precision course, followed by last man standing from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

SATURDAY (Competiton Day): 8 a.m. opening ceremony; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., times course, individual slow ride, team slow ride, partner slow ride & SMART ride.
