14-year-old boy dies after mini bike crash; second rider on bike reportedly left scene

FORT PIERCE — A 14-year-old boy died Sunday following a mini bike crash two days earlier in which a second rider on the mini bike apparently left the scene, according to Fort Pierce Police.

Police about 7:04 p.m. Friday went to the crash in the 1300 block of Birch Street, police stated. The location is east of South 25th Street, and close to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital.

Police determined the mini bike, with two occupants, traveled east on Soltman Avenue. The mini bike driver apparently didn’t stop at a stop sign at Birch Street, and crashed with a 2023 Ford F-250 pickup. Both riders were thrown from the mini bike.

The 14-year-old boy was critically injured and taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital where he died Sunday afternoon, police stated. The 14-year-old boy’s name was not released by police.

“It remains unclear who was driving the mini bike at the time of the crash,” police stated. “Witnesses reported seeing the second rider flee the crash scene with the damaged mini bike, along with two riders on a second mini bike.”

The pickup driver, a 34-year-old man, and passenger, a 33-year-old man, both of Fort Pierce, were not hurt. They stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers, police stated.

No other information was immediately available Monday.
