27 of the Weirdest Special Edition Cars Ever Made

Sometimes a special-edition car is totally organic and makes sense. And then there are times that an automaker pairs up with a manufacturer to create something bewildering. These are some of the oddest out there,

Toyota built and sold 850 of these Tundra Terminator 3 special editions back when the movie was in theaters. Each came with a bespoke grille, a V-8 engine, and upgrades like 17-inch titanium wheels, a Borla exhaust, and better lighting.

The modern Tony Stark famously drives an Audi R8. So why did Hyundai team up with Marvel for an Iron Man-themed Kona? We're not entirely sure. The results was predictably corny.

Memphis Group was an Italian design firm that helped define the wild aesthetic of the 1980s. A few years ago, BMW teamed up with Fiat heir Lapo Elkann's Garage Italia to pay tribute with special versions of the i3 and i8. They're over the top, but the Memphis Group style suits the futuristic designs of these cars.

To celebrate Sebastian Vettel's second Formula 1 championship, Infiniti created a hotter version of its FX SUV. Confused by the connection? At the time, Vettel drove for Red Bull, which carried Infiniti sponsorship. The craziest thing about this car was the price though—it cost almost double that of a normal FX.

The FX Vettel might not be the strangest special edition car to celebrate an F1 champ, however. To celebrate Mika Hakkinen's 1998 world championship, Mercedes made a special version of its decidely not-sporty A-class hatchback. There was also a David Coulthard version.

This special-edition Hyundai got all-wheel drive, a black paint job with red show-themed graphics, mudguards, custom floor mats, roof rack rails, and a 72-hour "survivalist's backpack." Despite its intentions, we're not sure it'd be the first car we'd choose to ride out the zombie apocalypse.

American readers likely won't be familiar with the Ford Ka unless they played Gran Turismo. The Ka was a more-stylish version of the Fiesta, and for some reason, there was a version that paid tribute to German airliner Lufthansa. Aside from some yellow accents and a badge, there's not much special about this.

Back in 2010, Jeep thought it would be a good idea to collaborate with the makers of Call of Duty: Black Ops for a special edition Wrangler, and this is the result. It looks virtually unchanged from the normal car, save for some decals, unique wheels, and other small touches.

In 1973, AMC teamed up with Levi's to create a Levi's special edition Gremlin, using a lovely blue paint and denim-like trim inside. Everything in the cabin was covered in Levi's-branded cloth, complete with buttons and zippers.

Movie-themed special edition cars are nothing new, but the Rogue One-inspired Nissan Rogue Star Wars car is one of few examples to not be featured anywhere in the film it's connected to. Featuring blacked-out trim and a bunch of Star Wars easter eggs, it's the perfect car for any mega-fan out there.

The Harlequin edition Golf was built using mismatched body panels at the factory, resulting in something truly unique. Today, Harlequins are highly sought-after, and carry a huge cult following.

The French automaker teamed up with German porcelain maker Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin to create this porcelain-accented special edition. It was one-of-a-kind and cost about $2.4 million. "L'or Blanc" translates to "white gold."

This Ford pickup cost Harley-Davidson fans around $50,000. They got an F-150 with a 6.2 liter V8 and a rumble-tuned exhaust. Harley-Davidson badges were sewn into the seats.

Dropping $35,000 in 1995 could buy you this special, Neiman Marcus edition BMW Z3 roadster, the version driven by James Bond in GoldenEye. Only 100 examples were made, and they were all spoken for within six hours of the car's announcement. We're not sure why either.

The Versace-treated Murciélago wore the fashion brand's logo stitching on the Nappa leather interior and a calf leather covered lower dash. Customers also received a free pair of blue calfskin driving shoes with purchase.

At least $100,000 would buy you this matte gray "stealth-like" Range Rover Evoque with interior details that Posh Spice said evoked (sorry) childhood memories for her. Only 200 were made, and came with a custom four-piece luggage set.

In celebration of the Chinese year of the horse, Rolls-Royce treated its Ghost with this special edition package that included small horse logos in various spots on the car.

Bentley made seven of these limited editions that were inspired by the seven-plane Breitling show-jet team. Flashy yellow accents and seven small jets decorated the dashboard.

The Gremlin wasn't the only Levi's special edition car out there. This 1975 Jeep Renegade came with trademark denim seats and Levi's logos as well. Someone needs to bring these back.

A customization for only the DBS, Virage and V8 Vantage S, Aston Martin only made 88 of these editions that featured special dragon symbols. 24-carat gold was applied to the carmaker's winged badges and the car debuted at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show.
